LightSample

Before There Were Stars
Have you ever experienced a total power outage? No light. No cell phone. Nothing. For a moment, you don't know which way is up or down. You feel your way through the room. You stumble. You reach into the void. Everything that was familiar to you is suddenly gone. Only darkness.
That’s exactly how the Bible describes the state before creation. Darkness. Everywhere. No stars. No moon. Not a single ray of light. Then God speaks three words: “Let there be light.” And there was light. Just like that. Because He spoke. With authority. With creative power. His voice pierced the darkness. And the light was there.
Here’s what’s interesting: God didn’t create the sun, the moon, and the stars until three days later. The light came first. Without the sun. Without the moon. Without a single source of energy.
Light was not the result of an explosion or a chemical reaction. It was the result of a presence—God’s presence. For God Himself is the source. Thousands of years later, John picks up on this and writes: “In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
The light that God brings into the world is more than ordinary light. It brings direction. It brings truth. It brings revelation, hope, and life.
James puts it this way: “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.” God isn’t just any light source among many. He is the Father of the heavenly lights. The origin. The beginning of all things.
Maybe your life feels like that power outage right now. Dark. Disoriented. Without direction. God wants to speak into your chaos today. The same words that changed everything at the beginning of the world: Let there be light.
