Light

DAY 2 OF 7

The Light Has a Name

You scroll through your phone. An influencer promises you the path to happiness. The next one has the formula for success. Coaches. Gurus. Motivational speakers. They all shine. They all glow. They all promise you direction. But is that even true?

It’s the Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem. The biggest festival of the year. For seven days, golden lampstands burn in the temple. They are so massive that their light can be seen throughout the city. Thousands of people pour in. The atmosphere is charged. And right here, Jesus steps forward and says: “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Jesus doesn’t say: I’ll show you a light. He doesn’t say: I’ll lead you to the light. He says: I AM the light. That’s almost audacious, don’t you think? The lampstands in the temple were impressive. No question. And yet they eventually went out. But Jesus? Never.

Isaiah had described this moment 700 years earlier: “The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.”

Generations had waited for this light. For a savior. For the Messiah. On that evening in the temple, in front of the burning lampstands, Jesus fulfilled this prophecy.

He is not one of many lights. He is the source. The same light that God spoke into the darkness at the beginning of creation stands here before them as a human being.

Today, something is constantly competing for your attention. Some promises dazzle. Others lead you astray. And still others fade faster than you think.

Jesus is the only light that never goes out, no matter how dark it is around you.
