In the Shadow
When you stand in the sun and look up at it, what do you see? A bright light. Beautiful colors. You feel the warmth. You experience the power.
And what do you see when you turn around? That’s right. Your own shadow. It was there the whole time. But only now that you’ve turned around does it become visible to you.
It works exactly the same way in your spiritual life. Whether you live a life in the light or constantly step into your own shadow depends on which direction you’re looking.
Adam and Eve live in paradise. God’s presence is everywhere. It permeates everything. There is no shadow. No lack. God sets only one limit for them. A single tree they are not to touch. And that is exactly where they reach out. A single moment of disobedience. And suddenly it grows dark. Not because God turns off His light. But because they turn away from Him. What they see now is their own shadow. Shame. Guilt. Fear. And then they do something that people still do today: They hide. Behind excuses. Behind masks. Behind a perfect facade on social media. Behind distractions and busyness. As long as no one sees what’s really going on.
But God goes after them. He calls out, “Where are you?” He asks, even though He knows where Adam is. He asks because He wants Adam to stop hiding.
It’s the same with you. God isn’t looking for you to expose you. He’s looking for you to bring you back.
John writes: “But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.” The light reveals. Yes. But not to condemn. But to set free. Paul puts it this way: “For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light.” What if you stopped hiding today and took a step into the light?
