Struck by Lightning
Saul is sure of himself. He is on the right path. In his pocket he carries arrest warrants against the followers of Jesus. He is smart. Educated. Religious. And convinced that he is doing God a favor. His mission: to imprison everyone who confesses Jesus as the Messiah. Men and women. Without exception.
Then it happens. Right in the middle of the road to Damascus. A light. Brighter than the midday sun. It throws him to the ground. His face hits the dust. His eyes burn. And then he hears a voice: “Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?” Saul stammers: “Who are you, Lord?” “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.”
The man who had everything under control lies on the ground. Blind. Defenseless. Helpless. Brought down by an overwhelming flood of light. His companions stand beside him in shock. They heard the voice but saw no one. For three days, Saul sees nothing. Eats nothing. Drinks nothing. Three days surrounded by total darkness. Everything he had believed in lies in ruins.
Then God sends a stranger to him—Ananias. He is afraid at first. He knows who Saul is. Yet he obeys. He lays his hands on Saul. “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” At that moment, the scales fall from his eyes. He can see again. But not just with his eyes. With his heart, too. Suddenly he sees everything in a different light. His whole life. His beliefs. His path. The persecutor becomes the greatest missionary in history.
Many years later, Paul writes in a letter: “For God, who said, ‘Let light shine out of darkness,’ made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of God’s glory displayed in the face of Christ.”
Do you see the connection? The same God who spoke light into darkness on the first day of creation still speaks light into dark hearts today. He did it with Saul. And He does it for you today. No matter how far you’ve strayed from God. His light crosses the entire universe to reach your heart too.
