Life for David, the author of this Psalm, wasn’t always easy. His story had more twists and turns than your favorite movie! Anointed to be king as a young shepherd, fighting a giant, rising up as king, going on the run from Saul, a long list of bad choices, and ultimately becoming known as one of the key figures in the story of our faith—David’s life was filled with all kinds of ups and downs. That context helps give his words in this Psalm more weight. He wasn’t praying this prayer from a place of ease or perfection. He wasn’t asking God to search his thoughts and remove anything standing in the way of himself and God’s best just for fun. No, David’s prayer came from a real human with real struggles and real faith.
His prayer gives us an insight into just how much David understood that, in order to move forward in faith and not stay stuck in our old ways, we need God’s help to change our minds and hearts. When we pray like David—when we ask God to reveal what thoughts we need His help changing to better walk in faith—we can trust that He will show us, help us, and lead us to a new, better way.
This week, use this verse as your own personal prayer to ask God to search your heart, know your thoughts, and lead you to a new way of thinking and living.

About this Plan

We’re all trying to navigate our way forward in this world, and yet, somehow, we tend to get stuck along the way and in more ways than one. And when that happens, we may start to believe that things will never change. In this devotional, we’ll explore the healthy ways in which we can seek freedom from the people, emotions, habits, and more that make us feel stuck. As we do, we’ll see that it’s only in Christ that we can be truly free.
