How do you tend to deal with authority? Are you a person who gives in and responds easily to whatever someone in authority asks of you? Or are you someone who tends to push back or resist the leading of authority? Maybe you’re someone who longs to be in authority—to be the one in charge? No matter how you feel about the topic, the reality is, we all navigate a world in which we have to live under someone else’s authority in one way or another. When those leaders are good and handle their authority well, we’re into it. But when they’re not? When they abuse their power, or ask too much of us, or break our trust, then following their lead isn’t easy.

Here, we see Jesus remind His followers of something important: He has all authority in heaven and on earth. In other words, He’s the boss. He’s in charge. He has the power to do anything. What’s amazing is that Jesus isn’t saying this to gloat or show off His power. No, He’s saying it as an assurance. His authority—the authority of God Himself—is the most powerful one there is. And it’s in that authority that Jesus invites us to step up and respond to the call on our lives: the call to share His message with the world. Even if the call is intimidating, we can follow it simply because we know we’re following Someone with real, true, lasting authority.

Spend time in prayer this week, calling on the authority of Jesus. Remember, He who calls you is trustworthy, and His leadership is good. Because of that, you can trust that you can follow Him!
