There are many things that identify an individual as a disciple of Jesus Christ. But one thing is made very clear in Scripture— disciples should be known for their Christ-like love for one another.
John 13:35 says, “By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.” Our love for others communicates the truth that we are disciples of Jesus. It is always easier to love those who love us back, like friends, family and those who are close to us.
The disciple should show Jesus’ unconditional love toward others as they love those who may be considered unlovable, or even their enemies. The lack of love towards others harms the witness of the disciple. We must never condone sin, but we must love the sinner. The love of God should radiate through the life of the Christian, marking them as a disciple of Jesus.
