Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

DAY 83 OF 365

Then Jesus, being filled with the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan (Luke 4:1 NKJV).

How do you overcome temptation?

The answer is found in today’s reading from Luke 4. We witness Jesus’ Spirit-filled living and a dependence on God’s Word as the key to overcoming temptation. Following His baptism by John the Baptist, Jesus is filled with the Holy Spirit and led into the wilderness (Luke 4:1). In this challenging wilderness experience, Jesus yields to both the Spirit and Word of God and experiences victory over Satan. (Luke 4:4).

Furthermore, as Jesus begins His ministry, He returns to Galilee in the power of the Spirit (Luke 4:14). His teachings and actions are infused with the authority and guidance of the Spirit, as He fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah 61 (Luke 4:18). This underscores the importance of both the Word and Spirit in the life of every believer.

Just as Jesus depended on the eternal Word of God and the empowering Spirit, you too must embrace these twin virtues for victorious living. Be filled with the Holy Spirit and grounded in God’s Word, allowing you to overcome any temptation.

Employment Point: Be controlled by God’s Spirit and the Word for victorious living.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
