Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

DAY 82 OF 365

They did not ask counsel of the LORD (Joshua 9:14 NKJV).

Do you seek God’s counsel in every situation?

In today’s account of Joshua and the Gibeonites, we see the consequences of failing to seek God's guidance. The Gibeonites, fearing destruction, resorted to deception to secure peace with Israel. Unfortunately, instead of consulting God, Joshua and the Israelites hastily made an agreement with them (Joshua 9:3–6). This decision led to unforeseen challenges, as Israel found themselves obligated to defend the Gibeonites against attack (Joshua 10:4–6).

However, God, in His mercy, used this situation to display His power. When enemies gathered against Israel and the Gibeonites, Joshua turned to God for help. In an incredible display of divine intervention, God caused the sun to stand still, granting victory to His people (Joshua 10:12–13).

This story teaches us the importance of seeking God's counsel before making decisions. When we fail to consult Him, we risk facing unforeseen consequences. Let us make it a habit to seek God's guidance in all matters, trusting in His wisdom and mercy.

Employment Point: Consult God always before making rash decisions.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
