Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

DAY 64 OF 365

For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you (John 13:15 NKJV).

What happens when Christians focus on the Kingdom while ignoring the cross?

In today’s reading, Jesus informed His disciples for the third time that He would be killed and resurrected. Instead of grasping the seriousness of Jesus' words, James and John asked for prestige in Jesus’ future Kingdom. These disciples desired the Kingdom while overlooking the cross. Three lessons emerge from their oversight:

  • Firstly, ignoring the cross breeds selfish ambition (Mark 10:35–37). Despite hearing Jesus' words on suffering, James and John simply sought positions of fame. Many Christians today follow John and James’ selfish example.
  • Secondly, ignoring the cross leads to spiritual blindness (Mark 10:38–41). The brothers failed to grasp Jesus’ references to suffering and death. You may miss crucial lessons when you shy away from the cross, leaving you unprepared for the suffering you will encounter.
  • Thirdly, sacrificially serving Jesus leads to future greatness (Mark 10:42–45). Jesus responded to the brothers, saying, "whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant" (Mark 10:43 NKJV). Greatness starts with serving others for God's glory. Always remember, the cross comes before the crown.

Employment Point: Employ the above lessons to be great for Jesus.

About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions help readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word—adapted from the book Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year Two, by Dr. Ken J. Burge, Sr.
