Come as You Are: A Journey With Jesus for Women

DAY 2 OF 8

The story of the woman caught in adultery in John 8:1-11 is one of the most powerful moments of grace and truth in the Bible. It reveals Jesus' heart toward those burdened by sin, shame, and condemnation. The key takeaway? In Christ, there is no condemnation—only the invitation to a new life.

Grace in the Midst of Judgment

Picture the scene: A woman is dragged into the temple courts, surrounded by an angry mob of religious leaders. She has been caught in the act of adultery—publicly humiliated, fearing for her life. The Law of Moses dictated that she be stoned, but there’s something off. Where is the man? If she was caught in the act, then he should be facing judgment as well. This glaring omission exposes the hypocrisy of the accusers—they weren’t seeking justice; they were setting a trap for Jesus.

They ask Him, “Teacher, this woman was caught in adultery. In the Law, Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now, what do You say?” (John 8:4-5). If Jesus says to stone her, He contradicts His message of grace. If He says to release her, He appears to undermine the Law. Instead of reacting to their accusations, Jesus stoops down and writes on the ground—a moment of silence that shifts the focus from the woman’s sin to the hearts of the accusers.

Then, He speaks a single sentence that dismantles their self-righteousness: “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” (John 8:7). One by one, they walk away, convicted by their own conscience.

Jesus’ Response: No Condemnation, A New Identity

Now, it’s just Jesus and the woman. He looks at her and asks, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” She replies, “No one, sir.”

Then comes the life-changing statement: “Then neither do I condemn you. Go now and leave your life of sin.” (John 8:11).

In this brief exchange, Jesus does something extraordinary:

  1. He releases her from condemnation. Despite her guilt, Jesus extends mercy. He does not dismiss sin, but He offers grace.
  2. He gives her a new direction. Jesus does not excuse her actions but calls her to a transformed life. Forgiveness is not just about wiping away the past—it’s about stepping into a new future.

Why This Matters for Us

Many of us carry the weight of past mistakes, shame, and guilt. We fear being "exposed" like this woman, afraid of judgment from others and from God. But Jesus sees us fully and still chooses to love us.

Romans 8:1 assures us: “Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.”

This means:

  • You are not defined by your worst mistakes. The woman caught in adultery was known by her sin, but Jesus gave her a new identity. The same is true for you.
  • God’s grace is greater than your failures. The religious leaders wanted punishment, but Jesus offered mercy. His grace is bigger than your past.
  • Forgiveness is a doorway to transformation. Jesus didn’t just forgive her; He called her to leave her old life behind. His grace empowers us to change.

A Challenge for You

Is there an area in your life where you feel condemned? Maybe it’s something from your past that you can’t let go of. Maybe it’s an ongoing struggle that makes you feel distant from God. Jesus is offering you the same grace He gave to this woman. He is not here to condemn you—He is here to restore you.

Take a moment today to reflect on His forgiveness. Confess your struggles to Him and receive His grace. Then, like the woman in John 8, walk forward in the freedom He has given you.
