Come as You Are: A Journey With Jesus for WomenSample

The story of Mary Magdalene in Luke 8:1-3 reveals a powerful truth: Jesus has the power to bring freedom and transform lives. Mary’s life was once marked by darkness, pain, and oppression. Possessed by seven demons, she was trapped in a reality where she had no control over her own mind or actions. But everything changed when she encountered Jesus.
The Bible doesn’t provide the details of how Mary became possessed or how long she suffered, but we can imagine the hopelessness she must have felt. She may have tried everything within her power to be free but found no relief. Society likely viewed her as beyond hope—someone to avoid, fear, or reject. Yet, when Mary couldn’t save herself, Jesus stepped in and did what was impossible for her. With a word, He cast out the demons and restored her to a new life.
Mary’s story is not just about a miraculous deliverance—it is a testimony of Jesus' power and His willingness to step into the darkest places of our lives. In a culture where associating with someone like Mary would make a person ceremonially "unclean," Jesus did not hesitate to draw near to her. Instead of being repelled by her condition, He touched her, spoke to her, and set her free. This act not only restored her physically and spiritually but also gave her dignity and a place of belonging.
From Bondage to Purpose
After her encounter with Jesus, Mary Magdalene’s life was never the same. She went from being outcast and broken to becoming one of His most devoted followers. Luke 8:3 tells us that she, along with other women, supported Jesus and His disciples out of their own resources. Mary, once powerless and trapped, was now empowered to serve and contribute to the work of God’s kingdom.
Her transformation is a reminder that Jesus doesn’t just free us from our struggles—He calls us into a life of purpose. No matter how broken or hopeless we may feel, Jesus can heal, restore, and invite us into something greater than ourselves.
Jesus Still Brings Freedom Today
Mary Magdalene’s struggle was with evil spirits, but today people face all kinds of bondage. It might not look the same, but things like addiction, fear, shame, anxiety, and unhealthy habits can hold us captive. Many people seek comfort or escape in temporary things—money, relationships, substances, or distractions—but these only mask the pain rather than provide true freedom.
Jesus is still the One who brings freedom. Just as He had the power to deliver Mary, He has the power to break the chains in your life. No struggle is too hard for Him to overcome. As Jeremiah 32:17 says, "Ah, Sovereign LORD, You have made the heavens and the earth by Your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for You."
Living in Freedom Through Christ
Experiencing freedom doesn’t mean that life becomes easy or struggles disappear overnight. Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages us to "throw off everything that hinders" and to "run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus." Walking in freedom is a daily choice to trust Jesus and rely on the Holy Spirit for strength.
When you face struggles, instead of relying on your own power, you can turn to Jesus. He invites you to bring your burdens to Him and promises to give you rest (Matthew 11:28-30). Like Mary Magdalene, you don’t have to fight your battles alone—Jesus is ready and willing to set you free.
A Challenge for You
Is there something in your life that feels too big to overcome? What area of struggle do you need to surrender to Jesus? This week, take the step of entrusting that burden to God. Ask Him for freedom and strength to persevere.
You don’t have to stay bound—Jesus offers you a life of freedom and purpose. Will you trust Him to deliver you?
