God's commands aren't simply a list of rules that people have to follow because God wants to take away freedom - instead, His commands are a matter of God wanting the best for His people. God makes it clear in these verses that obeying God or turning away to disobey Him is a matter of life and death. God knew that if the people worshipped other Gods, this would lead to their downfall and their destruction (and it ultimately did). God also knew that if the people did what He wanted, they would be blessed and have a life of flourishing, spiritually and physically.
The people had to choose; Israel ultimately chose to disobey God for most of its existence before God sent deliverance through His son.
Think it Over: What are some other "gods" people look to today? Are you choosing anything else over God?
