If we put together a list of the biggest questions Christians ask, "When is Jesus coming back?" would probably be right near the top. That's the same question the disciples asked here. Jesus is about to ascend and no longer be visible to them, so they see an opportunity to ask him the big question, "Okay, Jesus, if all this is happening, then does that mean you're about to set everything right and remake the world?" Jesus seems frustrated in his response - that's not for you to know. That's part of this story we don't like. We think what we need more than anything is to have Jesus' schedule. If we could know when things are going to occur, then we would be able to follow.
But Jesus seems to think differently. He says the disciples didn't need to know when the kingdom was coming--what they needed was his power. And the same is true for you and me. We can trust God with the timing. What we need more than anything else is the fullness of his power in us to be living witnesses every day we have. Jesus promises that his power is yours for the taking--the power to live, speak, think, and act like him so that everyone can come to faith.
Think it Over: Why do you think Jesus said we needed his power to live as his witnesses? What's so hard about it?
