Paul makes a lot of confident statements. He says that if you put your faith in Jesus, your life is safe in Jesus. He says that Jesus is going to come back for you. He says that when Jesus comes back, you'll be with him, excited and celebrating - more than you can imagine. This isn't Paul's guesswork or wishful thinking; he knows this is reality. I have to imagine the Colossians didn't always feel so confident. In some ways, Paul was more confident of their faith in Jesus than they were. Maybe you feel like the Colossians, not always so confident in your faith in Jesus. Does Jesus love me? Is this all for real? How can I know for sure?
What Paul points out is that if you've put your faith in Jesus, however much you feel like you understood, the reality is the "old you" stopped existing, and the "new you" is you found in Jesus. Apart from your doubts or fears, that is what is true.
Think it Over: What "earthly things" tend to draw your eyes downward and keep you from looking up? How can being confident in the reality of who you are in Christ keep your eyes looking up?
