Finding Joy in the Rooms of a Mother’s Heart

Devotional

The Kitchen

If the mother is the heart of the family, then the kitchen is the heart of the home. The kitchen is the place where scrumptious meals are prepared, where love is tasted, and where genuine care for one another is a delicious aroma. A kitchen is often the room in the family home where games are played, where conversations are rich, and where understanding is served generously.

It is no secret that motherhood can be exhausting; there are many days when you feel that you are scraping the bottom of your emotional barrel. But may I share a secret with you in the kitchen of your heart? I do believe that it is in the plan of God for the years of mothering to be emotionally abundant years for a woman, not years of emotional famine. God desires for the season of constant mothering to be years of satisfying memories and refreshing strength for you; this is why we will spend some time in the kitchen of your heart.

You don’t have to pretend to be supermom because you have a super God who is available to you at any time of the day or night. It is in the kitchen of your heart that His presence is the most appetizing and His characteristic flavor is at its most intense. This is the place where you marinate in all that He is and in all that He has for you.

It’s in the kitchen of your heart where you must set your priorities. If you are not healthy spiritually, then you will never be healthy emotionally. You will never be the stable emotional mother that you desire to be for your children until you put first things first. You must serve yourself a heaping portion of intimacy with Christ every day in order for you to prepare the appropriate emotions to serve your children.

A mother must set her mind, her emotions, and her heart on present-tense living. She must determine to be fully there in every moment with her children. When you are up to your elbows in the stew of giggles, loose teeth, and science projects, you are at your very best. This type of living is so much more satisfying than an immaculate home, perfectly applied makeup, or a designer wardrobe. It’s a delicious life!
