The primary point everyone remembers about Jonah is that he was swallowed by a whale and survived. Not only was Jonah swallowed by a whale (it was a big fish if we’re being really technical), but a lot more happened in his story. Jonah believed in God. Good start, right? Jonah would have really liked Jesus’ comment to love God with full strength, heart, mind and soul. But Jonah would have had a hard time with Jesus’ follow-up commandment about loving others. He was probably hoarding his overflow.
In the Old Testament, God commanded Jonah to go to a city called Nineveh. Sounds easy, right? Nothing like a little road trip. Jonah struggled with this, though, because God wanted him to tell Nineveh that God loves them. But Jonah thought Nineveh didn’t deserve that love. And if they didn’t deserve God’s love, then they definitely didn’t deserve Jonah’s. Well, that’s where Jonah was wrong. One of the most arrogant, yet subtle, attitudes we can have is assuming we deserve God’s love more than someone else.
Some restaurants, for lack of seating or abundance of reputation, only serve you if you have a reservation. Jonah felt like the Ninevites didn’t have a reservation – they shouldn’t be served.. But even though the reputation is phenomenal, there’s an over-abundance of tables available in God’s Kingdom. And everyone is invited!
