Graduation Day!

DAY 1 OF 5

A Graduation Of Military Proportions

Joshua had one of the most profound graduation days in all of the Bible. He had served as Moses’ second in command and when Moses died, Joshua was called to lead. We read about the graduation day in Joshua 1:2 when God said this to Joshua, “Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them—to the Israelites.”

We don’t know what Joshua was feeling that day. Perhaps he was overwhelmed with the task ahead. Perhaps he was super excited for the future! He was leading the people into unknown territory. Maybe he had doubts about his own ability to transition into this new stage of his life. Can you identify with him?

If you read on in the Bible, Joshua becomes one of the Bible’s greatest military leaders as he leads the seven-year conquest of the Promised Land. To this day, Joshua is used as an example of an effective leader! On that “graduation” day, God gave him a powerful charge: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Joshua may have been intimidated by the size of the task ahead of him, but he was obedient to God. Yes, he was a great military leader, but even more important, he believed God was faithful. God promised Joshua’s ancestor Abraham that his descendants would dwell in the land. God was faithful! He brought His people into the Promised Land and He used Joshua to lead them.

Do you believe that God is faithful? Will He lead you in the way He wants you to go?

Like Joshua, look to the future with the hope that God is faithful.

Suggested Prayer:

“Father God, You have led me this far and I trust You with my future. You were faithful to Joshua. Help me to be strong and courageous. Help me not to be afraid or discouraged. I know You will be with me wherever I go. I trust You, God. Lead me. In Your Son’s name, amen.”
