Surrender

DAY 2 OF 5

WHY SURRENDER IS NECESSARY

Primary Scripture: Ephesians 2:10

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

Ephesians 2:10 KJV

Surrender positions us to walk obediently in what God’s grace has already prepared for us. God has prepared a life of purpose and obedience for us in Christ, but surrender is often the beginning of walking in that direction.

We can love God and still resist His leading. We can pray for His will while remaining attached to our plans. We can ask Him to reveal our purpose and then hesitate when His answer requires us to leave what is comfortable. Without surrender, life may begin to feel as though we are living beneath the place of obedience, growth, and fruitfulness to which God is calling us.

This does not mean that surrender earns God’s plan. His calling begins with His grace. Surrender is our response to that grace; it enables us to walk in the good works He has already prepared.

Consider Abraham again. Imagine if he had refused to follow God’s leading. Imagine if he had stopped in the middle and said, “I do not understand the point of this. I am going back to what I know.” God’s purpose was greater than anything Abraham could see when the journey began. Genesis 12:4 tells us that Abraham departed as the Lord had spoken. He did not have every detail, but he had God’s word.

To understand why surrender is necessary, we must also look at Jesus in Gethsemane. He did not pretend that the weight before Him was easy. He brought His anguish honestly before the Father and prayed, “Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done” (Luke 22:42 KJV).

Surrender is not denying that something is difficult. It is acknowledging the true weight of what we face while still yielding ourselves to God’s will. Jesus shows us that surrender is not weakness; it is obedience strengthened by complete trust in the Father.

If I had not surrendered to God’s call into ministry, I might never have discovered the person He was forming me to become. I would not have known the potential He placed within me to speak, teach, and write. At first, I felt too reserved to stand before people and too aware of my limitations. But God was not asking me to possess everything I would need. He was asking me to surrender.

God may be speaking to you through His Word, placing a persistent desire in your heart or confronting a fear that has kept you from moving. Every impression, dream, or desire must be tested by Scripture and submitted to the Holy Spirit. When His direction becomes clear, stop measuring the call by your present ability and begin measuring it by His faithfulness.

Surrender does not earn God’s purpose; it positions you to walk obediently in what His grace has already prepared.

PRAYER

Father, thank You for the purpose You have prepared for me in Christ. Forgive me for praying for Your will while remaining attached to my own plans. I surrender my fears, limitations, and expectations. Holy Spirit, help me discern Your leading through Scripture and give me courage to obey. Not my will, but Yours be done. In Jesus’ name, amen.

TODAY’S SURRENDER

Where might you be asking God for direction while resisting an instruction He has already given? What is your next step of obedience?
