Surrender

DAY 1 OF 5

RELEASING THE KNOWN

Primary Scripture: Genesis 12:1–4

“Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee.”

Genesis 12:1 KJV

Whenever I hear the word surrender, I picture someone releasing what they have been holding without yet possessing what they need to grasp next. It is stepping into the unknown without knowing exactly where you are being led. In modern language, it is like following a navigator before you can see the final location pin.

Surrender can initially feel like loss. It can feel as though you are losing control, giving up your right to direct your life or releasing your ability to determine what happens next. Fear and uncertainty often accompany surrender, which is why we hesitate when God asks us to trust Him.

I remember when God called me into full-time ministry. I hesitated. I was afraid of a future I could not see. Accepting His call meant leaving what had become normal, comfortable, and familiar. I was used to leading my own life, maintaining control and finding ways to help myself. Following God required me to learn something different: He was leading, and I was following. He already had the plan. My responsibility was to trust and obey.

Abraham’s story comes to mind whenever I think about surrender. He came from a household shaped by inherited traditions and idolatry. Joshua 24:2 tells us that Terah, Abraham’s father, served other gods. Yet God called Abraham out of the environment and inheritance he had always known.

God did not immediately give Abraham the complete picture. He simply told him to go to a land He would show him. Abraham released the known to embrace what was still unknown. He exchanged the familiar for the unfamiliar, the old for the new, and his family’s pattern for God’s promise. He did not know every step, but he trusted the One who had called him.

Surrender is not limited to the moment we kneel at an altar and give our lives to Jesus. It is the daily decision to live the life God reveals through His Word. It is faithfully following the Holy Spirit’s leading even when we do not understand where the road will take us.

Sometimes surrender involves a major instruction. At other times, it appears in ordinary moments. When God says, “Forgive,” and you forgive—that is surrender. When He says, “Share the gospel,” and you obey—that is surrender. When He asks you to release your pain and receive His comfort—that is surrender.

Perhaps the Lord is not asking you to understand everything today. Perhaps He is asking you to release what you have been holding and take the next step with Him. You may not know exactly where He is leading, but you can trust the One who leads.

Surrender is releasing the known because you trust the One who is leading you into the unknown.

PRAYER

Father, I surrender my life to You again. Forgive me where fear, comfort, and my desire for control have kept me from obeying. Teach me to trust You when I cannot see the complete picture. Holy Spirit, reveal every area I am withholding from You. Jesus, You are Lord over my plans, my future, and my whole life. In Jesus’ name, amen.

TODAY’S SURRENDER

What familiar thing, habit, plan, or fear might God be asking you to release? Write down the next act of obedience He has already placed before you.
