Snapshots: Work Within

DAY 3 OF 5

Get Comfortable Being Uncomfortable

Shortly after moving into a new city and home, we noticed our kids’ sleeping habits had shifted. It was not uncommon to find one or both of them in our bed by morning. And if you are a parent, you know that is uncomfortable for you, not for them.

We decided it was time to make a change. We bought fun new bed covers and started staying in their room until they fell asleep, planning to sneak out after.

But I will be honest, it took longer than expected. Some nights, I was so tired I would fall asleep on the floor.

One morning, my wife showed me a picture she had taken. It was my son and I, asleep side by side on the floor. At some point, he had left his comfortable bed just to be close to me.

That snapshot hit me.

I felt like God was asking, Are you willing to leave your comfort to be close to Me?

There is nothing wrong with comfort. It is a blessing. But when it comes to following God, comfort is not usually part of the calling. He does not ask us to live easy lives. He asks us to live obedient ones.

Sometimes we have to leave the soft bed of convenience and step onto the hard ground of faith.

Growth happens when we trade comfort for closeness. That is where trust is built. That is where calling is formed.

Jesus said in Matthew 16:24, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.”

True discipleship costs something. But the reward is a life marked by purpose, presence, and a deeper connection with Him.

Pause: Have you been choosing comfort over calling?

Plan: Identify one area where God is asking you to stretch. Take one small step, even if it feels uncomfortable.

Pray: God, help me leave what is easy if it means getting closer to You. I want to grow, not settle.

About this Plan

Snapshots: Work Within

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to change what’s around us that we overlook what God wants to do within us. This plan, based on my book Snapshots, invites you to slow down and look inward. Each devotion begins with a photo and a lesson God taught me, paired with Scripture, reflection, and simple challenges. As you go through this plan, you’ll discover that real growth starts on the inside. God is shaping your heart, your thoughts, and your perspective, and as He does, everything around you begins to change.
