Snapshots: Work WithinSample

Trust the Pause
Have you ever noticed that on the days you are running late or have something important, every red light feels longer? Or somehow every train decides to cross your path?
On this particular day, I had somewhere important to be. I was doing my best to get there on time, but I found myself stuck at a railroad crossing. The gate was down, the lights were flashing, and there was no train in sight.
I was alone in the car, but that did not stop me from venting out loud. “Why now? Why today?”
In that moment, I felt the Holy Spirit gently interrupt me with a convicting thought: You do realize you are complaining about the very thing that is protecting you?
That crossing was not punishment. It was protection.
And I believe God used that pause to show me something bigger.
Sometimes the seasons we feel stuck in are the very ones keeping us safe. We get frustrated waiting for doors to open or prayers to be answered, but waiting is not wasting. What feels like a delay may actually be divine protection.
God sees what we cannot. He knows when it is safe to move forward.
Just like that railroad gate, His pauses are not without purpose. They are moments of mercy, even when they do not feel like it. When God says “not yet,” He is still being good.
He is more interested in you finishing well than finishing fast.
Lamentations 3:25 says, “The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him.”
Even in the silence, He is working. Even in the stop, He is present.
Pause: Is there something you have been frustrated about that might actually be God’s protection?
Plan: Instead of pushing past the pause, thank God for what He might be keeping you from.
Pray: God, help me trust Your timing, even when it feels slow. I believe You are protecting me, not punishing me.

About this Plan

Sometimes we spend so much time trying to change what’s around us that we overlook what God wants to do within us. This plan, based on my book Snapshots, invites you to slow down and look inward. Each devotion begins with a photo and a lesson God taught me, paired with Scripture, reflection, and simple challenges. As you go through this plan, you’ll discover that real growth starts on the inside. God is shaping your heart, your thoughts, and your perspective, and as He does, everything around you begins to change.
