Grace: An Easter Devotional

DAY 1 OF 3

SIN & SEPARATION

Easter starts with a sobering truth: the state of humanity. We must first understand the necessity of the cross and the empty tomb before we can enjoy them. Scripture makes it abundantly evident that this is a very personal issue rather than merely a remote one.

We are informed that everyone has sinned and is not up to God's standards. This encompasses both the good we fail to accomplish and the bad things we do. It is sinful to know what is correct but choose not to do it. Jesus sets an even greater standard when He summarizes the law: to love God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, and to love our neighbor as ourselves.

When we compare this, we start to see how serious the issue is. God demands total dedication—every moment, every day—rather than partial devotion. Therefore, sin is a situation that separates us from a holy God rather than merely a periodic failure. We are unable to close the gap on our own; it is real.

Acknowledging this fact is intended to prepare our hearts for grace rather than to leave us in despair. We won't be able to fully appreciate Easter's gift until we realise how much we need it.

Reflection Questions:

  1. In what ways do you fall short of loving God and others fully? (Mark 12:29–31)
  2. How does recognising both what you do wrong and what you fail to do shape your understanding of sin?

About this Plan

Grace: An Easter Devotional

Easter is more than an empty tomb; it’s about what those three days mean to us. This 3-day devotional explores the weight of our sin, the love shown through Jesus on the cross, and the freedom found in true forgiveness. Whether you’re revisiting the story or seeing it anew, it’s a journey from guilt to grace, from bondage to freedom, inviting you into a restored life and the promise of a richer, hope-filled future.
