Prayers for the Broken

DAY 4 OF 5

God, Help Me

A few years ago, when my husband, Matt, was out of work for eight months, I learned what it feels like to run out of options. We weren't just in the kind of “things are tight” that you adjust to with a tighter budget. The belt on the budget had zero room. Our situation was the kind where you stare at the ceiling at night and genuinely don’t know where the next dollar is coming from.

My husband had knocked on every door we could find, and they were all closed. Plans fell through. The emails dried up. From the very first month, we asked God to help us. I had prayed before he lost his job that God would give him a new job. Yet it seemed there was no help on the horizon.

I'm guessing you've been there, too, in some way or another. Your situation may be a wayward child or a rare disease, but you've not known what else to pray except, "Help, please. Now, Lord, would be best."

The psalmist of Psalm 121 asks the same question: where does my help come from? The answer isn’t a strategy or a backup plan. My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

The One who made everything out of nothing can certainly make a way out of your impossible. Help doesn't always look like what we expect, though, does it?

Matt’s job situation didn’t resolve on my timeline. But God’s help showed up in a hundred small ways I would have missed if I hadn’t been desperate enough to look for it.

God, help me is not a prayer of weakness. It’s the most vulnerable prayer you’ll ever pray. It’s the moment you stop pretending you’ve got this and finally let God be God.

Soul Care Moment

What situation have you been trying to manage on your own? Say it plainly: God, help me with ________.

Pray With Me

God, please help me. I’m sending an SOS to You, Lord, because this battle is too big for me. But I know it’s not too big for You. I do not know what to do, so I fix my eyes on You. Father, be my Provider, Protector, and Guide. I need your help. Amen.

Truth to Carry

God made everything out of nothing; He can certainly make a way out of your impossible.
