One of the most challenging things about ending a relationship may be one of the most unexpected. Sure, there are all kinds of things that go into getting unstuck or moving on from a relationship that no longer serves you. The conflict, the hurt, the fight, the pain, the change—they’re all difficult. But once the dust settles and you officially start moving forward, there’s a new challenge that you may not even realize is there. That challenge? To find a way to honor the other person with your words.
Not so simple, is it? As humans, one of our instincts when a relationship ends or changes is to talk about it with others. And sure, sometimes that can be helpful as you process the change and the feelings that come with it. But if we’re not careful, what starts as healthy processing can turn into what Paul called “unwholesome talk.” Even if we have every reason for what we want to say about the other person, Paul’s reminder here is key in getting unstuck.
If we want to move forward and move on in a real, lasting way, the best thing we can do—both for ourselves and the other person—is to choose our words wisely. To be careful about what we share and how we share it. To look for ways to build up rather than tear down. To honor ourselves, the other person, and God who loves us both by speaking with wisdom, kindness, and care.
This week, challenge yourself to find a way to avoid unwholesome talk. How can you build others up—even the ones you’re no longer in relationship with—by using the right words?

About this Plan

We’re all trying to navigate our way forward in this world, and yet, somehow, we tend to get stuck along the way and in more ways than one. And when that happens, we may start to believe that things will never change. In this devotional, we’ll explore the healthy ways in which we can seek freedom from the people, emotions, habits, and more that make us feel stuck. As we do, we’ll see that it’s only in Christ that we can be truly free.
