Pride: The Hidden SinSample

Pride—Subtle and Pervasive
Today, let’s begin by considering how pride often lies beneath the surface of many actions and attitudes. It can start with a simple focus on oneself, quietly influencing decisions and behaviours.
Pride may be the hidden reason behind actions such as taking what does not belong to you, justifying it with the belief that you deserve it more than others. It can also drive dishonesty, as the desire to protect one’s reputation takes precedence over truth. In more extreme cases, pride can even lead to the destruction of life, rooted in the belief that one’s own judgement outweighs the value of another.
As you read, notice how pride can make it difficult to admit mistakes, apologise, or seek forgiveness. It can foster bitterness and grudges, slowly eroding relationships and communities. Pride is described as a root cause that allows other harmful behaviours to grow, making them more persistent and harder to address.
Reflect on how pride can twist even well-intentioned actions, such as helping others or sharing knowledge, turning them into opportunities for self-glorification rather than genuine service. Pride is subtle and often goes unnoticed, yet its effects can be widespread and destructive.
Questions to consider
- In what ways might pride be influencing your thoughts or actions without you realising?
- What steps could you take to address pride and promote humility in your relationships?
- Can you think of examples where pride has affected a group or community, and what were the consequences?
