Close to the Purpose, Close to the Person – “Go and Make Disciples…”
Closeness to Jesus is never an end in itself. From the very beginning, Jesus invited people into relationship so they could be transformed—and then sent. Purpose flows out of proximity. The closer we draw to Jesus, the clearer His mission becomes. And the clearer His mission becomes, the more our lives begin to align with it.
Jesus’ final words were not complicated, but they were clear. He commissioned His followers to go and make disciples. This was not just an assignment for a select few—it was the natural outcome of walking closely with Him. When you know Jesus personally, His purpose begins to shape your priorities, your relationships, and your direction.
Purpose is not found by striving harder or doing more. It is discovered by staying close to the Person of Jesus. When we are close to Him, we begin to care about what He cares about. His compassion becomes ours. His mission becomes ours. We don’t have to force purpose into our lives—it emerges as we follow Him faithfully.
Being close to the purpose does not mean having everything figured out. It means being willing. It means living with open hands and a responsive heart. Jesus didn’t send perfect people; He sent transformed people. He sent those who had walked with Him, learned from Him, and been changed by His presence.
Making disciples is about influence, not position. It’s about living in a way that points others to Jesus. It’s about investing in people, sharing truth, and modeling what it looks like to follow Christ. This kind of purpose shows up in everyday moments—conversations, decisions, and relationships where Jesus is made visible through our lives.
When we drift from the Person of Jesus, purpose becomes burdensome. It turns into pressure instead of passion. But when we stay close to Him, purpose becomes a natural expression of who we are becoming. The mission is sustained by relationship. The work flows from worship. Obedience grows out of intimacy.
Jesus’ call to go is rooted in His promise to be with us. We are never sent alone. His presence goes before us, walks with us, and strengthens us along the way. Closeness to Jesus fuels courage, clarity, and confidence. It reminds us that purpose is not about our ability—it’s about His authority.
When you stay close to the Person, you stay close to the purpose.
And when you live from that place, your life becomes part of something far bigger than yourself.
Who might God be inviting you to invest in as you live out His purpose this week?
