Fear and the Other Side – “Take Courage. It Is I. Don’t Be Afraid.”
Fear has a way of distorting what we see and limiting where we’re willing to go. It keeps us focused on what could go wrong instead of what God might do. Fear often shows up when we feel out of control, when the future feels uncertain, or when obedience requires us to step beyond what feels safe.
The disciples knew this feeling well. They were doing exactly what Jesus told them to do, yet they still found themselves in the middle of a storm. The wind was strong. The waves were relentless. Fear took over because their circumstances didn’t match their expectations. They believed obedience would lead to safety, but instead it led them into uncertainty.
Fear grows when we focus on the storm instead of the Savior. It convinces us that we are alone and vulnerable. It magnifies what threatens us and minimizes what sustains us. When fear takes hold, courage feels distant and peace feels impossible. We begin to believe that staying where we are is safer than moving forward.
But Jesus didn’t abandon the disciples in the storm. He came to them. He stepped into their fear and spoke words of reassurance. His presence changed everything. The storm didn’t immediately disappear, but fear lost its authority. Courage returned not because circumstances changed, but because Jesus was near.
Fear often stands between us and the other side—the place God is leading us, the growth He is producing, the faith He is developing. The other side represents trust, obedience, and transformation. But fear resists movement. It whispers that staying put is safer than stepping forward. Jesus responds by reminding us who He is.
“Take courage. It is I. Don’t be afraid.” These words shift our focus. Courage does not come from feeling strong; it comes from recognizing Jesus’ presence. When we know He is with us, fear no longer has the final word. His presence gives us confidence to move forward even when the path is unclear.
Crossing to the other side requires trust. It means believing that Jesus is present even when circumstances feel overwhelming. It means choosing faith over fear and obedience over comfort. The storm may still be real, but fear does not have to define us.
Jesus meets us in our fear not to shame us, but to strengthen us. He invites us to trust Him in the middle of uncertainty. And when we respond, we discover that the other side is not something to fear—it is where faith grows and closeness deepens.
What fear might be keeping you from trusting Jesus and stepping toward the other side?
