Peace Through War

DAY 5 OF 6

David and Goliath

The biblical story of David and Goliath, found in 1 Samuel 17, recounts how the young shepherd David defeated the giant Philistine warrior Goliath to save the Israelites. Facing an army terrified by the massive giant, David volunteered to fight him, relying on his faith in God rather than his own strength or the armor offered by King Saul, which he found too heavy and cumbersome.

Armed only with a sling and a few stones, David struck Goliath in the forehead with a rock, causing him to fall, and then defeated him. The Philistines fled, and the Israelites were victorious—a triumph seen as a lesson in courage, faith, and God's power.

The key lessons in the story of David and Goliath are courage and action; faith over fear. David's unwavering trust in God, not his own strength, empowered him to face a giant when the entire Israelite army was terrified. David saw Goliath as defying the Israelite armies of God. He believed God would deliver them, illustrating that God defends His people and His name.

David rejected Saul's heavy armor and relied on his simple shepherd's tools (sling and stones), showing we should use our God-given abilities, tools, and talents to step out in faith, trusting Him for the outcome. In many of the other Biblical examples of divine intervention, God has helped His people win. He often commands us to simply use the items at our disposal—divine provision wrapped up in the familiar. A faith-response action is then required to transform the mundane into marvelous results.

Preparation is similarly demonstrated in Nehemiah 4:20, “Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us!” Preparation prevented a battle from occurring. Like Nehemiah’s laborers who helped rebuild the temple wall and gates, David balances labor (sling) and trust (faith). Victory ultimately flows from covenant faith and not weaponry.

A prime lesson in this battle is the importance of being courageous to stand up for God even when others won’t. Goliath's arrogance and reliance on his size contrast with David's humility, showing that pride leads to downfall.

About this Plan

Peace Through War

While war is never optimal, the Bible shows it is sometimes necessary in this fallen world. Examining battles like Jericho, Jehoshaphat’s victory through praise, and David vs. Goliath, we see that success is achieved not through human might, but through faith, obedience, and reliance on God's divine intervention. We have confidence that the Lord fights for His people. Scripture confirms that wars will continue until Jesus return; however, Christians already possess the ultimate victory through Christ's defeat of sin and death on the cross, urging us to face our personal struggles with faith and courage as we seek everlasting peace.
