The Posture to Obtain Mercy

Mercy is available—but it must be obtained. Matthew 5:7 says, “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.” This is a spiritual principle: those who show mercy are positioned to receive it. But there’s more. The posture of humility is essential. The Pharisee boasted in his righteousness; the sinner bowed in repentance. One was rejected; the other was justified.

Mercy flows to the humble. It resists the proud. If you approach God with entitlement, you miss the essence of mercy. Mercy is not a reward—it’s a gift. And gifts are received, not demanded. The self-righteous often miss mercy because they come with their CV. The broken receive mercy because they come with empty hands.

To obtain mercy, we must acknowledge our need. We must lay down our pride and pick up surrender. Mercy is not for the perfect—it’s for the honest. And honesty begins with humility. If you want to walk in mercy, walk in meekness. If you want to receive mercy, be quick to give it.

Prayer:

Lord, teach me to walk in humility. Strip me of pride and self-righteousness. Let me be quick to show mercy, that I may continually receive it. Keep my heart tender before You and my posture low before Your throne.
