Who Is This God We Speak Of?

A few years ago, I was taking care of my nephews. One afternoon, a little voice broke through the laughter and noise. Without warning, he said:

“Before, I was just Juan Diego. Now I’m Juan Diego with a family.”

Months after coming into our family, this statement showed that he realized he was more than accepted—he was chosen. Loved not because someone had to, but because they wanted to. That’s when belonging became part of who he was.

With tears in my eyes, I replied:

“Yes, you’re not alone anymore. You’re part of our family.”

I remembered this conversation as I reflected on Psalm 100:3. “Know that the Lord is God.
It is He who made us, and we are His; we are His people, the sheep of His pasture.” (NIV)

This verse reminds us of a powerful truth—we did not make ourselves. God created us, chose us, and calls us His own.

He didn’t just create us, He also loves us with affection. Like a shepherd with his sheep, He leads us, protects us, and gives us identity.

This is the God we worship. Not a distant being, not a cold or indifferent judge, but a loving Father. As Ephesians 1:5 reminds us: “God decided in advance to adopt us into His own family by bringing us to Himself through Jesus Christ.” (NLT)

He is a present Father. A Creator who calls us by name. He didn’t just make us. He wanted us. And He brought us home.

He is the One who transforms “just Juan Diego” into “Juan Diego with a family.” The One who turns loneliness into belonging.

And if you still don’t feel like you belong—He’s waiting for you with open arms.

"Lord, thank You for Your unfailing love, for forming me in my mother’s womb and adopting me as Your child. Thank You for caring for me like a shepherd cares for his sheep, for giving me identity and belonging. Help me know You more and recognize who You are in every area of my life. Amen."
