Growing Multigenerational Faith

DAY 28 OF 31

Am I a kid at heart? I’ve always been someone who related to children more than adults. Someone who always caught a child’s eye and could make them smile. Does this mean I’m just a big kid who never made it to adulthood?

When I first started to attend church in my 40s, I told my late husband that I wanted a child’s Bible to read. One that wasn’t too wordy. Would get straight to the point. Here I was, an elementary school teacher with a Master’s degree, but I wanted a children’s Bible to learn who Jesus was.

After attending church and reading through the children’s Bible, I knew I needed to be fed more (1 Peter 2:2). So, I joined a Bible study that was like Bible Study 101. Very basic. But I was a sponge, like a child eager to learn all I could. Like a baby getting solid food (Hebrews 5:14)

Now that I’m the Early Childhood Coordinator at my church, I’ve realized that I am helping the next generation learn about our Savior. I’m older now. I’ve not only matured as a human due to life experiences, but I’ve matured as a Christian - spiritually. I have more life and more wisdom to pass on. I understand more now that I’ve grown as a Christian. (Job 12:12)

Jesus is calling. Are you ready to be a child and see Him with that kind of faith?

Questions to Consider

  1. When was the last time you experienced the kind of carefree joy reminiscent of childhood? What happened?
  2. What gets in the way of your experiencing childlike faith?

Actions to Take

  1. Pray for childlike faith in order to model it for the next generation.
  2. If you haven’t already, learn about children’s perspectives. Depending on your gifting, you might volunteer, read children’s literature, or watch kids’ movies. Notice their simple, yet meaningful faith and joy experiences. Look for God’s lessons through these things.

Prayer to Make

Father God, may I never lose my childlike faith even in my older age. Your Word is true. Your Word feeds my faith whether in a child’s Bible, Sunday school class, or a women’s Bible Study. Allow me to grow and mature in knowledge of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen

About this Plan

Growing Multigenerational Faith

What does it mean to have a multi-generational heart for the church and the world? Does God care whether we are intentionally raising up new generations of followers of Jesus? Over the next 31 days, you will hear from multiple voices from multiple generations sharing what the Bible says about intentionally investing in all generations to grow a vibrant community of faith that bears witness to the wonders of God. We all matter, we all play a role. Come discover God’s heart for the generations. Psalm 78:4
