DAY 27 OF 30

Day 27: Attiyq Youm – The Ancient of Days

Devotional:

In Daniel's remarkable vision of heaven's courtroom, we are introduced to one of the most awe-inspiring titles for God: Attiyq Youm (Ah-teek you-hm), or "The Ancient of Days." This name speaks of God's eternal nature. He is without beginning or end, older than time, sovereign over history, and unchanging in all His ways.

Ancient is Not Outdated

Ancientness can feel irrelevant in a world obsessed with youth, speed, and innovation. But God's "ancientness" is not about being outdated but about being eternal, foundational, and wise beyond measure. The Ancient of Days is not just older than all things; He precedes all things and is held together by His enduring word.

Daniel's vision in chapter 7 shows a stark contrast between the shifting powers of earthly kingdoms and the unshakable reign of the Ancient of Days. While empires rise and fall, God remains seated on His throne, clothed in purity, radiating glory, and surrounded by fire that represents His holiness and power. His judgment is just. His knowledge is complete. His rule is eternal.

This Title Lasts Beyond Generations

This title also connects to our longing for stability. In times of chaos, when the world feels unstable and unpredictable, the name Attiyq Youm grounds us in the truth that God is firmly in control. He has seen the rise and fall of nations, the turning of every century, and the unfolding of every personal story. Nothing surprises Him. Nothing overwhelms Him. He is, before all things, and remains above all things.

But the Ancient of Days is not distant. Though eternal and exalted, He is also relational. In Daniel 7, after the Ancient of Days takes His seat, the "Son of Man" approaches Him and is given dominion, glory, and an everlasting kingdom. This "Son of Man" is Jesus, who often referred to Himself with that title. Through Jesus, we are invited to approach the Ancient of Days not in fear, but in faith.

Revelation continues this imagery when it speaks of the throne of God and the Lamb. It shows us that the Ancient of Days, through the Lamb who was slain, has made a way for us to be in His presence forever.

Letting the Ancient of Days Shape You

When you pray to the Ancient of Days, you are praying to the One who has seen it all, knows it all, and rules over it all. Your problems are not new to Him. Your pain is not overlooked. And your future is secure in His hands.

Let the majesty of Attiyq Youm remind you today that while everything around you may change, God never does. He is your steady place, wise guide, and eternal King.

Prayer:

Ancient of Days, thank you for your eternal nature and perfect wisdom. In a world of change and uncertainty, you are my anchor. You see all, know all, and hold all things together. Help me trust your timeless rule and rest in the knowledge that you are the same yesterday, today, and forever. It is in the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What does it mean to you that God is eternal and unchanging?
  2. How does knowing God as the Ancient of Days comfort you in times of uncertainty?
  3. Are there any areas in your life where you must trust God's eternal perspective over your limited view?
