The Meaning of Life

DAY 6 OF 7

The meaning of life will only be found through our obedient involvement in God’s Great Commandment and the Great Commission.

A prerequisite for experiencing meaning is absolute and total obedience to the will of God. The words “obedience” and “submission” are not popular in our present society. Why? Our present society lives in open rebellion towards God and is primarily focused on self. Is it to my benefit? Will it give me pleasure, success, and comfort? We do not like to march to the beat of another drummer. “I want to be my own person.”

The problem is that we don't really know what’s best for us. God, however, made us and therefore knows what is best for us. This line of thinking is an “abomination” to many people. They do not want to submit to God and obey Him.

First, God calls us to love Him. He calls us to worship Him and live for His glory. For the unregenerate mind, this is nonsensical. However, the moment when you are born again by the Holy Spirit, the meaning and purpose of life change. This is a mysterious and divine thing that happens.

Second, God calls us to love our neighbours. It is the strangest thing: when we start to love our neighbours, life becomes more meaningful and satisfying.

Third, God calls us to take the message of salvation through Jesus to the nations. He wants us to be His disciples and go into the world, making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:18-20). This was Jesus’ last command. This is by far the most neglected command of Jesus. God is calling us to take action against the pain in the world. He wants us to do something about poverty and the physical needs of people. He is sending us to the darkest places in the world to bring light, love, and the message of Jesus to the people who live there. He wants us to bring the hope of salvation to a world living in darkness and despair. He wants us to look out for brokenness and bring healing and comfort to those who are broken (Luke 4:18-19).

It is amazing how our lives change when we get involved in the pain and brokenness of the world around us. As we get involved in God’s mission in the world, we will experience a sense of purpose and meaning.

Every person has a unique purpose in God's grand design. We must discover and fulfil this purpose by understanding God's will and aligning our lives with His plan.
