FruitFULL - Patience, Kindness, and Goodness - the Character of Christ in Action

DAY 6 OF 7

Day 6: Goodness in an Unethical World

Key Passage:

Romans 12:21 (NLT) "Don't let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good."

Related Passages:

  • Amos 5:14-15
  • Galatians 6:9-10
  • Matthew 5:14-16

Devotional:

In a culture where ethical lines are increasingly blurred and moral relativism prevails, the fruit of goodness stands as a beacon of light. Today we explore how to live out moral excellence in a world that often rejects absolute standards of right and wrong.

Romans 12:21 offers a powerful strategy for confronting evil—not by matching its tactics but by overwhelming it with goodness. This approach requires both discernment to recognize evil and courage to actively counter it with good. Rather than merely avoiding contamination by evil (a defensive posture), we're called to actively advance goodness (an offensive strategy).

Amos 5:14-15 echoes this active pursuit: "Do what is good and run from evil so that you may live!... Hate evil and love what is good." The Hebrew verbs here indicate energetic action—not passive preference but passionate pursuit. When the Spirit produces goodness in us, we develop both moral clarity to distinguish good from evil and moral courage to choose good even when it's costly.

This fruit of goodness has both personal and social dimensions. Personally, it involves integrity—aligning our private and public lives with God's standards rather than compartmentalizing our faith. Socially, it involves justice—actively working to right wrongs and create systems that reflect God's character.

Galatians 6:9-10 encourages us not to grow weary in doing good, "for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers." This reminds us that goodness requires perseverance—the results of our good actions may not be immediately visible, but they will eventually bear fruit.

Jesus described His followers as "the light of the world" (Matthew 5:14)—illuminating darkness and making the invisible visible. When we practice goodness in our workplaces, neighborhoods, and digital spaces, we shine light that exposes deception, clarifies confusion, and guides others toward truth.

In practical terms, goodness might look like:

  • Maintaining integrity in business dealings even when others cut corners
  • Standing up for someone being mistreated
  • Creating art, music, or literature that reflects truth and beauty
  • Volunteering time to address community needs
  • Speaking truth with grace in conversations where falsehood prevails

Call to Action:

Identify one area where you can actively advance goodness this week in response to a specific evil or ethical challenge. It might be addressing workplace dishonesty, countering gossip with affirmation, supporting an organization that fights injustice, or creating something that brings beauty into a dark situation. Make a specific plan for how you'll pursue goodness in this area, and take the first step today. Remember that goodness isn't just avoiding what's wrong but actively advancing what's right.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What specific evils or ethical challenges in my sphere of influence is God calling me to counter with goodness?
  2. Where have I been passive about evil when God is calling me to be active in advancing good?
  3. What would it look like to be "the light of the world" in my specific workplace, neighbourhood, or online community?

Prayer:

Righteous God, in a world where evil often seems to prevail, I thank You that You are still sovereign and that goodness will ultimately triumph. Forgive me for times I've been passive in the face of evil or compromised my integrity for convenience or acceptance. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I might have both moral clarity to recognize good and evil and moral courage to choose good even when it's costly. Use me as an instrument of Your goodness in [specific situation]. Help me to persevere in doing good even when results aren't immediately visible. May my life shine as a light that draws others to Your goodness and truth. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

FruitFULL - Patience, Kindness, and Goodness - the Character of Christ in Action

About This Week's Plan: This week, we'll explore the middle three aspects of the Fruit of the Spirit: patience, kindness, and goodness. These qualities reveal Christ's character in our interactions with others, especially during challenging circumstances. Each day, we'll examine what these fruits look like in practice, how they're developed through life's difficulties, and practical ways to express them in our relationships. Whether you're dealing with difficult people, feeling worn down by waiting, or seeking to make a positive impact, these devotionals will help you cultivate the patience, kindness, and goodness that reflect Jesus to the world.
