FruitFULL - Patience, Kindness, and Goodness - the Character of Christ in Action

DAY 3 OF 7

Day 3: Goodness - Moral Excellence in Action

Key Passage:

Psalm 23:6 (NLT) "Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the LORD forever."

Related Passages:

  • Romans 12:9-21
  • Ephesians 5:8-10
  • Micah 6:8

Devotional:

The sixth fruit of the Spirit is goodness. The Greek word "agathosune" goes beyond kindness to include moral excellence and a desire to do what is right. While kindness is often about being tender and compassionate, goodness sometimes requires firmness and correction.

Goodness is active, not passive. It's not merely the absence of evil but the presence of moral excellence. Ephesians 5:9 describes it as "fruit of the light" that consists in "all goodness, righteousness and truth." When the Spirit produces goodness in us, we don't just avoid wrong; we actively pursue what is right, true, and beneficial.

This distinction is important. Many people consider themselves "good" because they don't commit certain obvious sins. But Jesus calls us to a higher standard—proactive goodness that reaches out to address needs, confront injustice, and advance God's kingdom. In the parable of the Good Samaritan, the priest and Levite didn't actively harm the injured man; they simply passed by without helping. Only the Samaritan demonstrated true goodness by taking action.

Psalm 23:6 provides a beautiful picture of God's goodness actively pursuing us. The Hebrew suggests not just following but chasing after—God's goodness hunts us down! When the Spirit produces goodness in us, we similarly become people who pursue opportunities to do good rather than waiting passively for them to arise.

Romans 12:9 instructs us to "Hate what is evil; cling to what is good." This requires moral discernment—the ability to distinguish between good and evil, right and wrong, truth and falsehood. In a culture of moral relativism that blurs these distinctions, the Spirit develops in us both the clarity to recognize goodness and the courage to pursue it, even when it's countercultural.

Micah 6:8 summarizes what true goodness looks like in action: "He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God." Justice, mercy, and humility combine to form a life of genuine goodness that reflects God's character to the world.

Call to Action:

Identify one area where you can proactively advance goodness this week. It might be addressing an injustice, meeting a need, speaking truth in love, or creating something beautiful that reflects God's character. Make a specific plan for how you'll pursue goodness in this area, and take the first step today. Remember that goodness isn't just avoiding what's wrong but actively advancing what's right.

Reflection Questions:

  1. How has my understanding of "being good" been shaped more by cultural values than biblical truth?
  2. In what situations might I need to demonstrate goodness through loving confrontation rather than just being nice?
  3. What specific injustice or need in my community is God calling me to address as an expression of His goodness?

Prayer:

Righteous Father, thank You for Your perfect goodness that actively pursues me. I confess that I often settle for moral neutrality rather than pursuing excellence. Fill me with Your Spirit so that I might not only avoid evil but actively advance what is good, true, and beautiful in this world. Give me discernment to recognize goodness and courage to pursue it, especially when it's difficult or unpopular. Use me as an instrument of Your goodness in my family, workplace, and community. May my life demonstrate that Your ways are truly good and worth following. In Jesus' name, Amen.

About this Plan

FruitFULL - Patience, Kindness, and Goodness - the Character of Christ in Action

About This Week's Plan: This week, we'll explore the middle three aspects of the Fruit of the Spirit: patience, kindness, and goodness. These qualities reveal Christ's character in our interactions with others, especially during challenging circumstances. Each day, we'll examine what these fruits look like in practice, how they're developed through life's difficulties, and practical ways to express them in our relationships. Whether you're dealing with difficult people, feeling worn down by waiting, or seeking to make a positive impact, these devotionals will help you cultivate the patience, kindness, and goodness that reflect Jesus to the world.
