Hosting God’s Presence in Your Marriage – a 10-Day Devotional GuideSample

Day 2: Your Identity—The Foundation for a Stable Marriage.
“So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.” — Genesis 1:27 (NIV)
Looking back now, it makes perfect sense that God started my journey by first uncovering my identity.
Why? I had to unlearn some deeply rooted, unhealthy beliefs that had shaped how I saw myself. When you do not have a healthy self-image, it's easy to fall into the trap of people-pleasing, constantly craving approval, overly concerned with others’ opinions, and feeling validated only when someone else says you're “enough.”
A lot of people enter marriage subtly expecting their spouse to heal, complete, or fix them. If you experienced trauma growing up, it can leave cracks in your self-image…cracks that marriage won't automatically fill. I realised this: If I was going to be a stable wife, I had to let God heal me first.
And how did He start? With His Word. One verse at a time, He rebuilt the way I saw myself:
•I am created in His image (Genesis 1:27).
•I am fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).
•I am chosen, royal, and set apart (1 Peter 2:9).
•I am seated in authority with Christ (Ephesians 2:6).
•I am His beloved (Romans 8:15).
As I embraced these truths, everything changed. I became joyful, confident, and free from the constant need for external validation. I no longer relied on my husband’s approval to feel beautiful or valuable. His actions, whether affirming or not, stopped dictating my emotions. Even in disagreements, I remained stable because I was rooted in God’s love and anchored in who He said I was.
So I ask you: Who are you, really?
Do you define yourself by your past? By your spouse’s words? By life’s hardships or disappointments? Or do you stand firm in who God says you are?
Your identity is not wrapped in your mistakes, struggles, or the opinions of others. God alone defines you. When you receive this truth deep in your heart, you'll begin to shed rejection, comparison, and insecurity like old clothing. You’ll walk in the wonder of who God created you to be.
Reflection Questions:
•Do I see myself the way God sees me?
•Am I chasing human validation more than God’s approval?
•How would my life change if I fully embraced my identity in Christ?
Take some time today to journal your honest answers in your diary. Meditate on them constantly. Let this be your breakthrough moment.
Scriptures for Reflection:
•Genesis 1:27
•Psalm 139:14
•1 Peter 2:9
•Ephesians 2:6
•Romans 8:15
