Hosting God’s Presence in Your Marriage – a 10-Day Devotional Guide

DAY 7 OF 10

DAY 7: Guard Your Heart

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”— Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

Have you ever noticed how powerful your thoughts are? If you spend all your time imagining all the bad things that could go wrong in your marriage, you unknowingly partner with the enemy to create negative realities. The mind is a battlefield, and the enemy is always looking for access, often through the door of your heart's focus.

What you meditate on becomes your reality. If your thoughts constantly revolve around worry, fear, and frustration, you will begin to see those emotions and expectations take shape in your marriage. But if you focus on what is true, pure, and uplifting and commit to personal growth, you’ll begin to notice some degree of peace, even in difficult seasons.

So, if the Bible says, 'As he thinks in his heart so is he,' then the question is, what are you thinking about? What are you allowing to take root in your heart? How is it shaping the atmosphere of your home?

If you're consistently feeding on harmful content—TV shows, music, social media, or conversations that glamorize perfection or undermine marriage—you’ll start to compare your spouse, question your relationship, and doubt your worth. In that case, rather than infusing inspiration into your life and marriage, you introduce defilement.

I want to challenge you: unfollow anyone who puts you under conscious or unconscious pressure to compare your spouse. This also includes people who cause you to doubt yourself. Do away with associations that belittle you or your journey.

‘Keep thy heart with all diligence; For out of it are the issues of life’ (Proverbs 4:23 KJV).

Avoid watching movies or listening to songs that make you regret being in your marriage. Yes, your marriage may be in a difficult place, and you may need to seek counsel on how to navigate it. However, protect your heart by seeking the right and accurate counsel.

‘Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things’ (Phil 4:8 KJV). These are the kinds of content you want to soak in. Let this become your focus. Let this guide your thoughts. Let this guard your heart.
