DAY 244 OF 365

God has a will

Webster defines one's will as a "strong and fixed purpose and determination." Synonyms include care, conviction, desire, determination, disposition, longing, passion, prerogative, purpose, resolution, volition, and want.

You get the idea. When we speak of one's will, we're talking about a personal prerogative, a determined desire for something or someone. And it's this concept of the will, and specifically God's will, which will be our focus for the next month. But our first step in understanding God's will is to establish this fact: God has a will.

It's one of the great tragedies of our modern society that God has been depicted as an indifferent and detached deity that does nothing but bounce around the clouds like some celestial balloon. Many are under the false impression that although He exists in a generic sense, He lacks the personal capacity to possess any conviction, desire, determination, disposition, longing, passion, prerogative, purpose, resolution, volition, or want.

As we'll see in the coming days, this is not the God of the Bible. From Genesis to Revelation, we're presented with a God whose will is evident on practically every page.

From His determination to create the heavens and the earth, to His desire to create man in His own image...from His intense longing to save humanity from destroying itself by bringing about the flood, to His passion to preserve a remnant of faithful followers...from His prerogative to call a man named Abram, to His resolution to bless those who would bless him...at every significant bend in the biblical record, we see the emergence and exercise of God's will.

The point is simply this: The Lord has a will. He has wants, desires, and longings. God has a position, a preference, a prerogative, and a passion. We must understand this because we can never live according to something unless we're fully persuaded it actually exists.

When we speak of one's will, we're talking about a personal prerogative, a determined desire for something or someone.

Think about it...

What does this passage reveal to me about God?

What does this passage reveal to me about myself?

Based on this, what changes do I need to make?

What is my prayer for today?
