Designed for Attachment

Have you ever felt a tug in your heart for something more—something eternal? The Bible tells us this longing is no accident; it’s God’s design. He has placed heaven in our hearts and then ordered things so that we might see Him.

On top of all that, He chooses to remain close to us all. He doesn't distance himself from us — it's us who pull away from Him. In staying near to all His children, he models healthy attachment, a design that researchers say we are all born with: an innate need to be attached to our parents and a lifelong benefit from being well connected to people, even into adulthood.

When we are connected to our Father in Heaven, we find security, purpose, and peace. The same is true for our children: they need a healthy attachment to their father.

When children enjoy a healthy relationship with their father, they generally exhibit better emotional regulation, enhanced social development, greater resilience, and a reduced risk of poor mental health. A father's healthy attachment also lowers the likelihood of poverty, school dropout, and behavioral issues.

Just as we need to be near our Father in Heaven, our children need to be near us. God has designed us to be attached.

Heavenly Father, thank You for being near me, even when I don’t see it. Help me feel Your presence today and lean into the attachment You offer. Show me how to reflect Your love and closeness in my family. Amen.
