Devotions on F.I.R.E. Year OneSample

But I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified (1 Corinthians 9:27).
What’s your strategy to complete the Christian race?
Paul’s audience is aware of both the Olympic and Isthmian games. Corinth hosted the latter, and strict training rules were imposed for the participants. Any violation of the standards results in being disqualified to compete. In this setting, Paul asks the following question, which expects a positive answer: “Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize?” He continues, “Run in such a way that you may obtain it” (1 Corinthians 9:24). We are similarly to discipline ourselves for the Christian life; focus is essential to complete the mission entrusted to us. The battle in the ring of life doesn’t compare to shadow boxing (1 Corinthians 9:26), but a strict discipline and training regiment.
Employment Point: Sacrifice self-indulgence and await your reward.
About this Plan

Devotions on F.I.R.E. journeys through the Bible in one year. Each day includes a devotion based on Dr. Burge’s F.I.R.E. method of Bible Study. F.I.R.E. stands for Familiarity, Interpretation, Relationship, and Employment. The F.I.R.E. method and the daily devotions helps readers remember and apply what they read as they fuel the fire in their hearts for God’s Word.
