Much of the life of Israel in the desert revolved around ceremony: there were regulations for certain seasons, foods, festivals, and family organizations. One ceremony we see here revolves around the trumpet to sound before the battle. This can seem puzzling for us modern readers, but God makes his purpose clear in verse 10 - these trumpets and their sounds serve as a reminder that the Lord has surrounded His people and will bring them victory. In this way, they are vital, and they show the heart behind God's regulations in the desert: to dwell with His people.
