The Egyptians are targeting the Israelites because they aren't Egyptians. The Israelites don't belong there. So, the Egyptians made their lives hard and joyless. But there's a little glimmer of what God is up to in this passage because the more that the Egyptians oppressed the Israelites, the more they flourished.
The world often thinks it can snuff out God's influence by being harsh enough, but the harder the world tries, the more God's influence spreads. That was true in Egypt. That was true in the early church. That's still true today.
Think it Over: How does this passage give us hope when our faith is risky for us?
