We have a hard time today accepting a God who seems to give some overly harsh consequences. We don't often see why things should be as big a deal to God as they are. It's just a little thing, right? Why can't God just calm down? Actually, we should think the other way around: what if we don't see how serious our actions are? What if God takes our choices way more seriously than we do?
Someone once pointed out that the severity of God's punishment here shouldn't cause us to question God; it should cause us to think about how serious sin was. We think it was just a fruit eaten, but God shows us it was much more. If we can begin to think that way, it makes God's grace seem even better. We realize just how great his love had to be to rescue us.
Think it Over: How do you think most people today would view this passage?
