40 Days of Spiritual Reboot

DAY 19 OF 40

Let's move forward in our discipline of meditation and explore the way that meditation can be a means to victory over negative emotions, compulsive behaviours, ungodly urges or impulsive weaknesses. Let me elaborate first on these four that I’ve chosen randomly out of several perhaps.

Negative emotions - like fears or phobias, nervousness, loneliness, embarrassment, inhibition, self-conscious.

Compulsive behaviour - like fidgeting, blurting out, becoming loud and jovial when insecure or self-conscious, snapping back when provoked etc. Behaviour that overcomes you and catches you unaware.

Ungodly urges - like lust in staring or stimulating yourself, wanting to know something that is none of your business, take something that isn’t yours, say something to deflate someone who is joyful or happy, steal someones thunder.

Impulsive weaknesses - like shopping on sale, buying to prove a point or not to be embarrassed or feel poor, (shop keepers know this about you, by the way), situations in which you just can deny yourself pleasure or provision, etc. When faced with these situations or choices… you just cannot say no. You’re too weak. Like chocolate maybe. Or hot hot samosas. (Ok too close to home… moving on…)

SCRIPTURES TO THE RESCUE

Ponder on and identify what are some of the weaknesses, compulsions, fears or distractions you personal struggle with. Pray for victory over this and begin by memorising the scripture that combats this weakness or situation. Meditate on this verse or phrase through the day constantly praying for victory. Remind God of his promise or remind yourself of God’s command. Do not chant! This is not biblical. You need to use meditation to change your thinking. God’s word is Gods way of thinking. Let the word of Christ ‘richly dwell’ in your hourly thoughts until it becomes ‘your own way of thinking’. You will experience amazing personal, internal, victory. And God will renew the inner man and give him strength.

Here are some scriptures meant for definite purposes.

Control on Appetite

Proverbs 23:2 (NKJV) And put a knife to your throat, If you are a man given to appetite.

Control over the eyes

Job 31:1 (NLV)“I have made an agreement with my eyes not to look with desire at a young woman.

Control over speech.

Isaiah 6:5-7 (ESV) 5 And I said: “Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips; for my eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts!” 6 Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7 And he touched my mouth and said: “Behold, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for.”

James 3:9-11 (NCV) 9 We use our tongues to praise our Lord and Father, but then we curse people, whom God made like himself. 10 Praises and curses come from the same mouth! My brothers and sisters, this should not happen. 11 Do good and bad water flow from the same spring?

God’s Help

Psalm 46:1 - God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

God’s Mindset

Isaiah 55:9 - “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts.

Safeguard against tempting.

Proverbs 4:26-27 (NLT)Mark out a straight path for your feet; stay on the safe path. Don’t get sidetracked; keep your feet from following evil.

God’s Protection

Psalm 28:7 - The Lord is my strength and my shield; My heart trusted in Him, and I am helped; Therefore my heart greatly rejoices, And with my song I will praise Him.

Control over the self

2 Peter 1:5 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, 6 to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, 7 to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love. 8 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

So these are some scriptures that give you an idea of what you can ‘own’ for the day, the season or for that year of your life. You hear people saying… “I made this my verse”. It means they owned it, believed it, lived by it, drew strength from it and won because of it. You can do the same.

Google any theme you need to find. God to biblegateway.com or similar sites and find what you’re looking for.

OPEN YOUR BIBLE

Follow your newly adopted bible reading plan. Hope thats going well for you.

COME CLEAN

Place your hand on your bible and tell God that you truly believe that it is His word that will give you the strength wisdom and will to overcome anything thats keeping you from enjoying all that God has in store for you through Christ. Claim victory through the word and ask God to make you knowledgeable of the scriptures that apply to your own situations. And God will do it.
