DAY 3 OF 5

Ask Good Questions & Listen Even Better

Tip #3: Be quick to listen after asking good questions!

Asking good questions is an essential part of a first date–in fact, your questions (or lack thereof) can make or break the date. So, aside from questions that give you insight into someone’s faith, here are some other great first date questions to ask:

What are you looking for in a relationship? This question can help you learn someone’s intentions and whether or not you’re on the same page when it comes to the type of relationship you want.

What is one goal you’re working on this year?/What is something you accomplished this year? These questions can help you learn where someone’s priorities are by hearing about something they want or already did accomplish.

What do you do for work?/What is your dream job? This question seems more practical, but it also opens up space to talk about someone’s big plans and hopes for their future.

What do you do in your free time?/What are your hobbies or interests? These questions help you learn more about a person’s day-to-day life. You can also learn if you have any common interests, which can lead to deeper conversations and more activities together.

Where did you grow up?/What is your family like? These questions can help you learn a bit about someone’s past. However, it’s important not to pry, especially if someone seems hesitant to share about their family or childhood.

Once you ask a good question, your next task is to listen even better. Being a good listener is a valuable characteristic. Not only does the Bible say we should be quick to listen and listen before we answer, but it also makes the other person feel heard and respected. And what’s better than that on a first date?

Of course, they shouldn’t have to do all the talking. After you listen and thoughtfully respond, you can share your answers to those questions too. By actively listening, you create a space for the conversation to flow naturally.

Listening well on a first date is an excellent way to truly get to know someone. And like the Bible says, it’s wise to do so!
