Exodus: A Group StudySample

WEEK 11 INTRODUCTION: THE GLORY OF THE LORD
Exodus ends with the climactic finish of Yahweh’s glory filling the tabernacle. Despite their grumbling, complaining, sinfulness, and idolatry, Yahweh chose to dwell among his people. In the same way, Christ dwelled among His sinful people to make a way back into God’s presence. He defeated the greatest spiritual enemies – death, sin, and hell – forever. Even in the wilderness of this life, God’s people are united to His presence by faith, being led and guided to the Promised Land of eternal life to come.
What is this passage saying?
After renewing the covenant following the idolatry of the golden calf, Israel begins to bring and produce supplies to construct the tabernacle.
What is this passage teaching?
Imagine the site of the construction of the tabernacle. Spools of colorful thread, treasures of gold and precious jewels, valuable skins of animals – the plunder of Egypt and the skilled produce of the Israelites – are gathered in a quickly growing pile. The massive influx of material is overwhelming that the craftsmen ask Moses to stop the collection. The “freewill offerings” (Exodus 36:3) of Israel were a sacrifice of praise to Yahweh’s deep graciousness and abundant loyal love.
How do I respond?
The Israelites’ generosity is a pattern for God’s covenant people today. Everything you have – the money in your account, the time in your schedule, the energy stored in your body – belongs to God. David declared, “The earth is Yahweh’s and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein, for He has founded it upon the seas and established it upon the rivers.” (Psalm 24:1-2). God does not just want ten percent of your income, a couple of hours on Sunday, and a passing thought throughout the day. Paul writes, “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” There is no burden in giving our lives in service to Christ. Like the Israelites, it is a sacrifice of praise to offer all that we are to Christ and His kingdom. What would it look like to offer all that you are in service to Christ? Are there areas of your life you are tempted to hold back from God?
