Day Four - I am a Good Friend

Welcome to this devotional for kids!  Our ‘UP’ series is inspired by our ‘We Will Elevate’ DNA - We practise showing kindness to those around us and never leave anyone out. We value others the way God values us by being a good friend and listener, respecting our leaders and parents, and choosing to always see the good in others.

During this series, we want to truly grasp what it means to honour and elevate those around us - not just those who seem to be popular or are the most important in our lives, but to remember that God wants us to ‘take delight in honouring each other’ that means everyone!

A Hole in the Roof in any children's Bible or Matthew 9:1-8

We have been learning about how a group of friends demonstrated how important it is to look out for each other. In this story, the friends took great risk in helping the man who could not walk get closer to Jesus by lowering him in through a hole in the roof!

When we put the needs of others first sometimes this means that God causes us to do things that are bold, daring and risk-taking but it is all driven by our FAITH!

The men could see that the house was crowded and there was no way in but to come through the roof. They didn’t give up, and they were determined to get their friend into the house. In this story, the roof would have been made of hard packed clay, and it would be very hot to stand on, so they had to dig their way through. 

ASK:

Why do you think the men did such an unusual thing to get their friend closer to Jesus?

God gives us dreams and plans for our friends! Take some time today to think about ways in which God might be asking you to be bold and daring in your friendship to show others just how much you love and value them. 

Put it to action! Maybe it’s making a card for that friend, helping them in a really brave way, or doing something kind for someone! Whatever it is that God stirs you to do, remember to have fun with it, just like our memory verse says ‘take delight’ in honouring each other.

REMEMBER:

Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honouring each other. (Romans 12:10)

SAY:

Jesus, you show us how to be kind, 

No greater love will we find. 

Your deep love that gives us great value, 

Growing us as we learn more about you. 

Our friend, our saviour, our kind teacher, 

Helping us see the good in each other.
