The Warrior’s Bride: Military Family Resiliency

DAY 9 OF 11

LIVING WITH THE FEAR OF DIVORCE AND DEATH

The military life changes our men and it changes us.  Even those with a solid understanding and acceptance of God’s purposes in war challenge the faith of those who lose their marriage, their spouse, or a close friend to divorce or death. Both situations force us to face fear, pain, suffering, and loss. Even when we know the person is safe in heaven, the emotions within us can be overwhelming.

Jesus faced these same emotions. The Bible tells of His tears when His friend Lazarus died. He wept over the hardness of Jerusalem’s heart toward Him. He agonized the night before His journey to the cross.

But what carried Jesus forward was that He knew the power of Almighty God. He could face death because He knew on the other side lay victory—not just for Himself but also for us!

As hard as it sometimes is, God knows what He is doing with your life and with your husband’s life. There is nothing that you or your husband will ever face that God didn’t know it first and allow it to happen.

Stay focused. God has a great purpose in all things. Even the hard things we don’t want to face. Even the emotional moments we wish wouldn’t come. Even the fears we hope never come to us.

Stand firm and remember the words God spoke to Joshua as he faced a mighty battle: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go” (Joshua 1:9).

Consider:

  • How often does the fear of divorce or death overtake you? Find at least one Bible verse you can write down on a sticky note or index card and post where you see it regularly.

Pray:

Father, I know that You have promised to watch over me, but sometimes I forget. Sometimes I wonder if You really care or are really close. Help me to see You.
