The Warrior’s Bride: Military Family Resiliency

DAY 6 OF 11

THE WORK OF A MASTER CRAFTSMAN

Like it or not, just as God formed the systems of our bodies to be interdependent, He also created us as people to need each other (Psalm 133:1, 1 Corinthians 12). We run into problems, though, because in His great wisdom, God intentionally made us different. He planned for us to need different things, get excited about different passions, and see situations uniquely.

Whether the problem is that our personalities conflict or that we speak different love languages, the result can feel painful. It can seem like the other person doesn’t care or that they are striking out at you. This is why you need to keep in mind that feelings should not be trusted. They rarely tell the whole story, and they often lead us to wrong assumptions.

If you don’t remember or have never heard of the four personality types or the five love languages, then I highly recommend you check them out. Learning these two things about my husband (and children) changed my perspective, allowed me to grant him more grace, and taught me how to love my husband in ways he could easily see as love.

Consider:

  • What are your personality types and primary love languages?

  • What is your husband’s? What is one small way you can speak his love language to him this week?

Pray:

Father, it is so easy to accuse my husband of being wrong or insensitive when he could simply be functioning as You created him. Help me to remember You knit him together, and he is wonderfully made. Teach me more about him and help me to love him best.

*Read more about the personalities and love languages in Chapter 7 of The Warrior’s Bride, or looking for books by Florence Littauer and Gary Chapman at your favorite bookstore.
